Where the biggest wins come from has changed
Read the record by decade and a pattern appears: the biggest wins have moved from the casino floor to the betting market, and the machines have not set a new record in over twenty years.
Edward Thorp publishes Beat the Dealer and proves blackjack can be beaten. The biggest wins of the era are made with mathematics, not machines.
1970s–80sTeam play industrialises that maths, Al Francesco’s Big Player system, Ken Uston’s books, and eventually the MIT partnerships. Wins are large but private; nobody publishes results.
1986IGT links machines across casinos into the first wide-area progressive, Megabucks. For the first time, a single spin can pay more than a career of advantage play.
2000–2003The jackpot era peaks: $34.9M in 2000, then $39.7M in 2003 from a $100 stake. That record still stands today.
2012Poker reaches its own ceiling, a $1,000,000 buy-in event pays $18.3M, a figure published to the cent.
2018The US Supreme Court strikes down the federal ban on sports betting. A regulated market opens, and with it a new way to lose or win eight figures.
2022A Houston furniture retailer turns ~$10M staked into a $75M payout, larger than any slot jackpot in history, and settled entirely on public record.
TodayThe largest verified win from a machine is 23 years old. The largest from a market is three. Where the record goes next is a question about regulation, not luck.
The numbers we won’t print
These figures appear on almost every “biggest wins” list. None of them survive a source check, so none of them appear above.

Rejecting a number is not the same as saying it never happened. It means nobody has shown their work, so we won’t repeat it as fact. That is the whole point of this leaderboard.
